Marissa Nadler – Light Years

Marissa Nadler closes the preview cycle for “New Radiations” with “Light Years”, her most devastating track yet about love’s slow fade. Following the cosmic murder ballad “Hatchet Man”, this one trades blood for something equally brutal – watching a relationship die quietly over time.

Autoharp adds sparkling textures to Nadler’s signature fingerpicking, creating space for lyrics that cut deep. “You used to see light years inside her / you used to be right there beside her” captures that specific heartbreak of remembering when someone saw magic in you. The verses build the mythology: “Back in the day, you were all the rage / when you could still hypnotize her.”

Nadler self-produced the track at Nashville’s Haptown Studios with Roger Moutenot and her home setup. Randall Dunn’s mix brings out the intimate details while Milky Burgess adds his signature woozy slide guitar and hypnagogic synth textures. The production feels both timeless and out of time – like it could be from a centuries-old scroll or a lost 1960s recording.

“New Radiations” marks Nadler’s tenth album, following 2021’s “The Path of the Clouds” and 2022’s companion EP “The Wrath of the Clouds”. The record leans into lush vocals and intricate arrangements, layered with Everly Brothers-style harmonies, Hammond organ, and fuzzed-out distortion. Bella Union and Sacred Bones continue their smart partnership in bringing her work to different territories.
